Cremation

When arranging a cremation, a choice must be made as to which crematorium to use. In Edinburgh there are three crematoria. Mortonhall Crematorium is on the south side of the city, and is owned by Edinburgh City Council. Warriston Crematorium is on the north east side of the city and is privately owned by Edinburgh Crematorium Limited. Seafield Crematorium is on the east side of the city, and is also owned by Edinburgh Crematorium Limited.

Mortonhall Crematorium is situated on Howdenhall Road close to the Edinburgh city bypass, and easily accessible from the south and west of the city. Mortonhall has two chapels, the Pentland Chapel and the Main Chapel. The Pentland Chapel can seat about 60 people and the Main chapel can seat 200 or more people. Both chapels have an organ, and neither have steps into the chapel, which makes them easily accessible for wheelchairs.

The times in the Pentland chapel are every hour with the first time being 9.30 am and the last time 4.30 pm Monday to Thursday, 9.30 until 3.30 on a Friday, and 9.30 am until 11.30 am on a Saturday. The times in the Main chapel are every hour on the hour with the first service at 9 am and the last 4 pm Monday to Thursday, 9 am until 3 pm on a Friday and 9 am until 11 am on a Saturday.

Warriston Crematorium is situated on Warriston Road just off Ferry Road. Like Mortonhall, Warristion has two chapels, the Cloister Chapel and the Lorimer Chapel. The Cloister Chapel can seat about 60 people and the Lorimer chapel can seat around 200 people. Both chapels have an organ, and are accessible for wheelchairs.

The times in the Cloister chapel are every 40 minutes with the first time being 9.10 am and the last time 4.30 pm Monday to Friday, and 9.10 am until 12.30 pm on a Saturday. The times in the Lorimer chapel are every hour on the hour with the first service at 9 am and the last 4 pm Monday to Friday, 9 am until 12 pm on a Saturday.

Seafield Crematorium is situated on Seafield Road in the east of the city. Seafield has one chapel which will seat about 150 people. The chapel is accessible for wheelchairs.

The times in the chapel are on the hour, every hour with the first time being 9 am and the last time being 4 pm Monday to Friday, and 12 pm on a Saturday.

It must be noted that in the Cloister chapel and the Pentland chapel, the 40 minute intervals are between services, not the length of the service. The service in these chapels should last about 20 minutes, allowing time to arrive and be seated, and time to leave the chapel, and the chapel area. Similarly in the Lorimer chapel, the Main chapel at Mortonhall, and the chapel at Seafield, the time interval is one hour. The service in these chapels lasts about 25 minutes, allowing time to enter the chapel and be seated, and time to leave the chapel and meet people after the service. It is possble to book two times if required at additional cost.
